SOURCE TO SHELF
Our Approach
Putting waste to work
While others wait for new funding to build new facilities, we start with a different question.
01 - Putting Waste to Work
What do we already have that isn't being used - and how do we put it to work?
Across PEI, good food goes unsold or discarded. Commercial kitchens and processing spaces sit idle. Food production workers are between jobs. Agricultural and seafood by-products are treated as waste rather than raw materials.
We identify those unused resources and build practical systems that put them back to work - for producers, for communities and for the Island economy. We rescue food needing transformation, activate underused facilities, and put out-of-work food production workers back on the floor.
02 - Community is the Engine
We don't tell Islanders what they need. We listen for it.
Our founder's 23,000+ member Facebook home cooking community, her weekly columns, cooking classes and programs are how we stay connected to what's real and what we need to build.
That community intelligence shapes everything we do. It tells us where the gaps are, who's already doing good work and what Islanders will actually use. Community is not our audience. It is our engine.
03 - Collaborative by Design
We don't try to do everything ourselves.
We look for others already doing it well - and we help them, share with them and link arms. That means building and sharing facilities, pooling food production equipment and creating shared infrastructure that multiple organizations and businesses can use.
A rising tide. We are not territorial about the work. We are motivated by the outcome.
04 - Bridging the Gaps
Good Island-produced food should not get stuck between source and shelf
We produce the food that others process and profit from. The lack of processing, equipment, storage, distribution, packaging, product development and market connections can all become barriers.
PEI Food Strong helps connect what already exists and build what is missing so more Island food can move forward. More of the profits stay on PEI.
